Entertaining and enchanting movie. My friend group was so hype for it that we all read the Ann section of Chris Jennings' "Paradise Now" together to prepare.

(Also, for what it's worth: I once recommended Zac's work to a loved one and she came back saying "The Wolves Who Hide Among the Trees" was her favorite song of them all.)

I viewed this film last night and having no experience with Shakers I understood some of the story, I found the dancing extremely off putting and the chanting or singing even worse. I had so looked forward to understanding Shakers. I understood the story but what the dancing and singing reminded me of no religion I am aware of.

That's completely fair. The film seems less interested in accuracy than in the ecstatic spirit of the worship — the vocabulary is really more contemporary theatre than historical recreation. Also, the film's really only concerned with the biography of the founder, who died decades before the "Era of Manifestations" — which is when things got really weird/cool.

Funny you say that because that’s what I was hoping for, a biography of the religion. Interesting they incorporated a later evolution of the crazy dancing and music into her story. I hate when story threads aren’t made clear by not including the appropriate information. It got great reviews I was excited having no idea it was classified as a musical. Oh well lesson learned!
